PURC Announces Increase in Electricity and Water Tariffs
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced new utility tariff adjustments, with electricity tariffs set to increase by 3.49 percent and water tariffs by 0.85 percent effective July 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on June 22, 2026, the Commission said the adjustments were made under its quarterly tariff review mechanism, which is designed to account for changes in key economic and operational indicators affecting utility service providers.
According to PURC, the review considered factors such as the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, inflation, fuel costs, and the electricity generation mix, particularly the cost of natural gas used in thermal power production.
The Commission explained that the quarterly review process aims to preserve the real value of tariffs, ensure the financial sustainability of utility providers, and support the delivery of reliable services while balancing the interests of consumers.
For the third quarter of 2026, PURC applied a weighted average exchange rate of GH¢11.2228 to one US dollar, reflecting a 0.2 percent depreciation of the cedi compared to the previous quarter.
The Commission also considered a three-month average inflation rate of 3.43 percent, down from 4.17 percent in the previous quarter, as well as a weighted average natural gas cost of US$7.9708 per MMBtu, representing a 1.58 percent decline.
Based on these economic indicators, PURC approved a 3.49 percent increase in electricity tariffs across all customer categories. Water tariffs were also adjusted upward by 0.85 percent to reflect changes in production and distribution costs influenced by prevailing macroeconomic conditions.
PURC expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their continued cooperation in implementing the quarterly tariff review framework and assured consumers that it remains committed to monitoring utility providers to ensure improved service delivery and value for money.
