Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader
Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as British Prime Minister and resign as leader of the Labour Party, following growing political pressure over the weekend.
Speaking outside Downing Street on Monday morning, Starmer outlined a formal timetable for his departure and confirmed that he had informed the King of his decision.
He said he had also asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin preparations for a leadership contest, with nominations set to open on July 9, 2026.
According to the proposed schedule, a new Labour leader is expected to be in place by September, when Parliament returns after the summer recess.
In an emotional address, Starmer thanked his wife, Victoria, describing her as his “rock,” and reflected on his time in office and public service.
“When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job—being the best husband I can,” he said, adding that he looks forward to spending more time with his children, whom he described as his pride and joy.
His voice reportedly broke at points during the statement as he also expressed gratitude to friends and colleagues who have supported him throughout his six years in senior political leadership.
