Police arrest four suspects over fatal shooting of couple in Zebilla district

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a juvenile, in connection with the murder of a married couple at Kusanaba in the Zebilla District.

The suspects, identified as Safianu Salam, Awal Salam, Jawal Salam, and a juvenile whose identity has been withheld, were apprehended on June 19, 2026, at a hideout in Kugre near Garu.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on June 10 when the victims, Apam Azubilla, 45, and his wife, Apam Anomsigna, 35, were in their room. Police say four armed men allegedly stormed the house and opened fire on the couple before fleeing the scene.

During the attack, Apam Azubilla reportedly called out for help, attracting the attention of his brother, Ayubugre Apam, who rushed to the room. Upon arrival, he found the couple seriously injured and lying in blood. He immediately raised an alarm, prompting efforts to seek medical assistance.

The victims were transported to the Zegoyire Health Centre, where Apam Anomsigna was pronounced dead on arrival. Apam Azubilla was subsequently referred to the Zebilla District Hospital but was also pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said medical examinations confirmed that both victims sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

As part of the investigation, family members handed over three spent AK-47 shell casings recovered from the scene to investigators.

The four suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court as investigations into the incident continue.
