“I also had a gun, but I didn’t pull it” — Shatta Wale reveals details of 2019 VGMA clash with Stonebwoy
Ghanaian dancehall musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has disclosed that he was carrying a firearm during the infamous 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) confrontation with his rival, Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy.
Shatta Wale made the revelation during a live TikTok session, claiming that although Stonebwoy pulled out a gun during the altercation, he also had one but chose not to use it after his associate, Kumoji, cautioned him against reacting violently.
“See, Ghana Music Awards where your man pulled a gun, I left my gun. Kumoji told me he felt a bad thing was going to happen. Imagine, as we stood there, he comes to shake me and I slapped him, they would use the law or something to take me to jail,” he revealed.
The incident occurred during the 2019 VGMA ceremony when tension erupted after Shatta Wale and members of his team approached the stage while Stonebwoy was receiving an award. The confrontation escalated, with Stonebwoy brandishing a firearm, triggering chaos at the event.
The incident attracted widespread public condemnation and led to police investigations, with firearms seized as part of the investigation. Both musicians also faced sanctions from the awards organisers.
Shatta Wale’s latest account has revived conversations about the incident and the longstanding rivalry between the two dancehall stars, particularly over what might have happened if he had also pulled out his weapon. His claim that he was armed has yet to be independently established, but it has added another controversial chapter to one of Ghana’s most talked-about music industry disputes.
