Tipper Truck Drivers accuse Military personnel of shooting, brutalising members at Afienya (Video)
The National Sand and Stone Tipper Truck Drivers Association has accused some military personnel of shooting and physically assaulting its members during an operation at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region.
The association claims several truck drivers and residents were subjected to violence, leaving some injured and hospitalised, with others reportedly battling for their lives.
According to the group, the military personnel also allegedly seized mobile phones belonging to some operators, impounded trucks and damaged several vehicles during the operation.
The allegations have raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel deployed to enforce restrictions on sand-winning activities, particularly as similar complaints have reportedly emerged from tipper truck operators in Ningo-Prampram.
Speaking on behalf of the association, its Greater Accra Regional Vice-Chairman, Abdul-Moomen Mohammed, popularly known as Kowa Naso, said some members engaged in legitimate business activities with valid operating licences had been prevented from accessing their businesses.
He maintained that the affected operators had obtained the necessary permits and clearance from the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly, questioning why they were being subjected to what the association considers excessive military action.
The association has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged shootings, physical assaults and destruction of property, insisting that lawful business operators should not be subjected to intimidation or abuse.
It has also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure that legitimate sand and stone operators are protected while security agencies carry out their enforcement duties.
The association is demanding accountability from the personnel involved and measures to prevent further confrontations between security forces and tipper truck operators.
