“D-Black’s instagram DM changed my music career” – Sefa

Ghanaian singer Jane Awindor, popularly known as Sefa, has revealed how an unexpected Instagram message from rapper and businessman Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, known in showbiz as D-Black, opened the door to her professional music career.

Sefa disclosed that she was still in school when she received a direct message from D-Black, who told her he had seen a video of her singing and was interested in having her join a new record label he was working on with music producer Rashid Abdul Mugeez, popularly known as DJ Breezy.

The singer said she initially doubted the identity of the sender and sought confirmation from her lecturer, who verified that the account belonged to D-Black.

“I was having lectures in school. I realized I had a DM on Instagram from D-Black. I showed the message to my madam that I got a message, but she should confirm if it’s really D-Black. When she checked, she said it’s him and it’s a verified account,” she recounted.

After confirming the message was genuine, Sefa said D-Black explained that he had discovered her talent online and wanted her to consider joining the planned label.

“I opened the message and D-Black said he saw a video of me singing. He and DJ Breezy want to start a record label, so I should let him know if I’m interested in joining,” she said.

She subsequently consulted her mother, who encouraged her to take the chance. Sefa then visited the studio, where she met several artistes for the first time and found herself feeling intimidated as a newcomer and the only woman in the room.

“I had to discuss it with my mother and she agreed that I should give it a try and let’s see how it would go. I went to the studio and I saw a couple of artistes there. That’s the first time I saw them, so I was so nervous and I was the only woman among them,” she recalled.

Sefa was later paired with Ghanaian musician Theophilus Tagoe, professionally known as Epixode, for a recording session. She said the artistes around her helped her overcome her nervousness and adapt to the studio environment.

“I was asked to record a song with Epixode and luckily for me, they helped me a lot because they realized I’m new in the industry,” she stated.

Her performance ultimately impressed the team and led to discussions about making her part of the label officially.

“After they realized I could sing well, that’s when the signing conversation came in,” Sefa added.

The revelation offers a glimpse into the unlikely beginnings of Sefa’s music journey, showing how a single social media message while she was still a student became a major turning point in her career.
