Webkid granted GH¢100K bail after 41 days in custody over cyberbullying
Ghanaian social media commentator widely known as Webkid has finally regained temporary freedom after being granted bail following weeks in detention over alleged online attacks targeting dancehall musician Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, and his family.
Webkid was arrested after being accused of using social media platforms to publish insulting and offensive remarks directed at Stonebwoy’s wife, Dr Louisa Satekla, and other members of the musician’s family. The issue quickly became one of the most controversial online disputes in Ghana’s entertainment space, with heated debates emerging over cyberbullying, freedom of expression and celebrity influence.
Speaking after the court proceedings, counsel for the social media personality disclosed that his client had been granted bail in the amount of GH¢100,000. According to the lawyer, Webkid’s prolonged stay in custody has had devastating emotional and financial consequences on his life and business.
“He is very traumatised because he has lost his clients. He is a businessman, and he has lost most of them. I am praying that his clients listening to us will return to him,” the lawyer stated.
The legal representative also questioned the fairness of the process and argued that the prosecution’s approach raised concerns about selective justice and the treatment of online speech in Ghana.
“If you want to determine whether this is justifiable enough, ask yourself this: would they pursue the same charges if he had made the same comments in the print media? If they would not prosecute him for making the same comments in traditional media, then answer for yourself whether this is appropriate or not,” he added.
Reports indicate that Webkid was initially remanded on May 11 before returning to court later in the month after prosecutors reportedly introduced additional counts against him. The number of charges against him subsequently increased from four to six as investigations progressed.
The case has continued to generate intense reactions online, with some social media users defending the need to combat cyber harassment while others argue that the punishment and legal pressure placed on the influencer appear excessive.
