EC Staff petitions President Mahama for removal of Jean Mensa and deputies
A staff member of the Electoral Commission (EC), Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate processes for the removal of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, citing alleged misconduct that he argues undermines the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
In a statement released on Monday, November 24, Mr. Adumadzie confirmed that the petition was filed in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the procedures for removing heads of independent constitutional bodies.
While withholding the full content of the petition—as required by law—he disclosed that it is based on 12 counts of stated misbehaviour. These allegations include cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence.
According to Mr. Adumadzie, the actions of the three senior EC officials have weakened public trust in the Commission and pose a threat to its independence and credibility.
He stressed that his petition is motivated solely by a desire to protect the Constitution and uphold accountable governance, adding that safeguarding the integrity of the Electoral Commission is essential to maintaining a credible democratic process.
Mr. Adumadzie therefore urged President Mahama to act on the petition by referring it to the Chief Justice to determine whether a prima facie case exists, as stipulated under Article 146.
