“GHOne banned Shatta Wale’s name” — Sister Deborah alleges
Ghanaian musician and media personality Deborah Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Deborah, has revisited a controversial moment from her television career, alleging that she was once instructed not to mention dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., widely known as Shatta Wale, on air during her time at GHOne TV.
Speaking on Showbiz Review on Asempa FM, Sister Deborah recounted that the incident occurred in 2015 while she was hosting one of her regular entertainment programmes on the television station.
According to her, she had been handed a script for the show as usual, but was later directed to intentionally leave out Shatta Wale’s name from a list of artistes mentioned during the segment.
“I was given a script as usual, and at the last part they had mentioned three artistes and I was told to leave Shatta’s name out. I disagreed because I didn’t think it was right,” she recounted.
She explained that the development occurred during the period when Shatta Wale was embroiled in a public fallout with Charterhouse, organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, after losing the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year category to Kaakie.
According to Sister Deborah, there was a general understanding within the media space at the time that mentioning Shatta Wale’s name on air was discouraged because of the ongoing tension between the musician and Charterhouse.
The singer further disclosed that the matter later escalated after a fan of Shatta Wale questioned her on Facebook about why the artiste’s name had not been mentioned during the programme.
She said she responded honestly by explaining that the decision had not come from her personally but from management.
“So a Shatta fan on Facebook asked why I didn’t mention him, and I told him it had nothing to do with me but the company. They got angry at me for saying that, which I found strange,” she said.
Sister Deborah’s revelation has reignited conversations about the long-standing tensions that once existed between Shatta Wale and Charterhouse, a period that significantly shaped discussions within Ghana’s entertainment industry at the time.
Over the years, Shatta Wale and Charterhouse have had several public disagreements, although relations between both sides have improved in recent times following reconciliation efforts and renewed collaborations within the industry.
