“Industry people attacked me” — Mzbel on Stonebwoy backlash

Veteran Ghanaian singer Mzbel has responded to criticism following comments she made about dancehall star Stonebwoy during a recent interview, insisting she was unfairly attacked for simply expressing her opinion.

In a Facebook video shared on June 5, 2026, the musician expressed frustration over what she described as pressure and intimidation from some individuals within the entertainment industry after she chose Shatta Wale over Stonebwoy during a comparison segment in an interview.

According to Mzbel, she had also been asked to choose between other artistes, including Adina Thembi and Gyakie, as well as between Samini and R2Bees, yet none of those choices generated backlash.

However, she said the reaction changed immediately after she selected Shatta Wale ahead of Stonebwoy, alleging that some personalities within the music industry privately confronted her over the decision.

“I would have ignored it if it were fans, but actual industry personalities came to my DMs to scold me like I was a child,” she wrote.

Clarifying her stance, Mzbel stressed that she never insulted Stonebwoy and acknowledged that they once shared a cordial relationship before naturally drifting apart over time.

She explained that her disappointment with the musician stemmed from a previous incident involving an article celebrating pioneers of Ghana’s hiplife genre. According to her, she was excited after seeing her name featured in the publication and had planned to celebrate the recognition publicly until Stonebwoy questioned the article online and called for corrections.

“I was happy, I was going to celebrate. I had taken screenshots and was about to post. Then I saw that Stonebwoy had tweeted that the writer of the article did not involve him and that the needful should be done.

“His post had completely overshadowed the whole celebration and that was what I was disappointed about,” she explained.

Mzbel stated that the incident later influenced some of the opinions she expressed about the award-winning musician.

The singer also stressed that she would not tolerate what she considers disrespect from people within the entertainment industry, adding that some of those criticising her were not on the same professional level as her.

Her comments have since sparked fresh debate online, with fans discussing whether public figures should be attacked for openly sharing personal preferences about fellow artistes in the industry.
