“Beef makes the industry better” — Sarkodie
Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has weighed in on the culture of rivalry in the global music industry, insisting that musical “beefs” remain an important part of the game.
In an interview with Adesope Olajide, the award-winning rapper reflected on his long-running history with dancehall artist Shatta Wale, noting that although the two are currently on good terms, future disagreements between them cannot be ruled out.
According to him, tensions in the entertainment space often come and go, even among artists who share mutual respect.
“Personally, to me I think we have a beautiful time now and let’s hold on to it. Beef, to me I will not say scratch it. Beef is very necessary. And I told Shatta Wale yesterday. We were talking and I told him that ‘listen, we are cool now but I am pretty sure that the next two or three months something will happen’. So it’s not going to stop,” he said.
He further explained that disagreements in the industry are sometimes inevitable and part of natural human interaction, especially among creative personalities working in a competitive space.
“When it happens, if I have to tell you something, I tell you something. If you have to tell me something, you tell me something,” he added.
Sarkodie and Shatta Wale have shared one of the most talked-about rivalries in Ghana’s music scene over the years, marked by both public disagreements and eventual reconciliation at different points in their careers.
Their tension notably escalated in the past following repeated public criticism and social media exchanges, which culminated in Sarkodie releasing his 2018 diss track “Advice”, widely interpreted as a direct response to Shatta Wale’s comments at the time.
In recent years, however, the two music heavyweights have appeared to bury the hatchet, showing signs of mutual respect and occasional public support for each other, even as Sarkodie now suggests that the possibility of future conflict remains open.
