Abu Trica’s application to stop US extradition to be heard July 9

The High Court in Accra has brought forward the hearing of a motion seeking to stay the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States.

The development was disclosed by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, in a Facebook post on Monday, July 6, in which he announced that both parties had been directed to appear before the court on July 9.

“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July,” Barker-Vormawor wrote.

The motion follows an earlier ruling by the High Court ordering Abu Trica’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted in connection with an alleged US$8 million romance fraud scheme.

Reacting to the initial ruling, Barker-Vormawor had described the proceedings as having been fast-tracked and indicated that the matter could ultimately be challenged before the Supreme Court.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote in a Facebook post on July 2.

Abu Trica has remained in custody since December 2025. He was, however, granted bail by the High Court in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after spending several months in detention.

He is being sought by United States authorities over allegations of romance fraud, and the outcome of the July 9 hearing is expected to determine whether the extradition order will be temporarily suspended pending further legal proceedings.
