Ex-NAFCO CEO Arrested Over Alleged Attempt to Access Frozen Bank Account
Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, has been arrested at the Accra International Airport while attempting to travel to the United Kingdom.
The arrest was announced by the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, in a post on social media. He explained that the arrest followed an alleged attempt by Mr Aludiba to unlawfully access funds in a bank account that had been frozen as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Describing the development as a fresh twist in the case, Dr Srem-Sai noted that the former NAFCO CEO is currently standing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic.
According to the Deputy Attorney-General, the trial High Court had granted Mr Aludiba permission to travel to the UK for a short period. However, authorities alleged that on Thursday, he used false means in an attempt to empty a frozen account held with Republic Bank, prompting law enforcement officers to intervene.
“Law enforcement officers have, a while ago, arrested Mr Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport,” Dr Srem-Sai stated.
He further indicated that the Attorney-General’s Office will, on Monday, apply to the court for a review of the order that allowed Mr Aludiba to travel outside Ghana.
Mr Aludiba is facing trial together with his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, over allegations of financial impropriety involving millions of cedis during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO.
As part of the ongoing legal proceedings, some of Mr Aludiba’s bank accounts were frozen to preserve assets pending the outcome of the case.
