Paul Afoko pledges support for Bawumia’s 2028 presidential ambition

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Awentami Paul Afoko has pledged to work behind the scenes to support Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become President in the 2028 general elections, following his unsuccessful attempt to become the party’s National Chairman.

Mr Afoko said his commitment to the party remained unchanged despite failing to secure the chairmanship position, assuring members that he would contribute to efforts to return the NPP to power.

In a statement issued after the party’s national executive elections, he said he would continue to support the NPP’s presidential candidate, just as he had done in the past, to help secure victory in 2028.

He also urged party members to put their differences aside and rally behind the newly elected national executives to strengthen the party’s chances in the next general election.

Mr Afoko acknowledged that he had been unable to secure the victory his supporters had hoped for, despite campaigning on his 3Rs agenda of Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power.

He noted that although he had presented his vision for rebuilding the party, delegates had chosen a different direction.

“I came with a message of 3Rs – Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power – but the delegates preferred otherwise,” he said.

Despite the outcome, Mr Afoko expressed optimism that the vision and leadership direction of the newly elected executives would help the NPP regain political power in 2028.

He thanked his campaign team for their commitment and sacrifices throughout the contest, as well as supporters who stood by him and believed in his vision.

He disclosed that he would meet his campaign team shortly to review the outcome of the elections and subsequently embark on a personal visit to thank supporters for their encouragement.

Mr Afoko also congratulated all contestants, particularly those who emerged victorious, and commended the Electoral Commission and the party’s National Election Committee for what he described as a smooth and uneventful electoral process.
