The Ghana Police Service has dismissed media reports alleging that officers raided the residence of Ibrahim Baba Bukari, Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), resulting in the death of a civilian.
In an official statement, the Police Service described the reports as false, clarifying that no such raid occurred. According to the statement, the Bono East Regional Command was responding to intelligence about a planned robbery around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025.
During the operation, one suspect—identified as Seidu Bukari, brother of Baba Bukari—was shot while attempting to flee from the scene. He was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police described Seidu Bukari as a known member of a robbery syndicate that has long terrorised residents in Techiman and surrounding areas. The group is believed to specialise in stealing motorbikes for resale, particularly in Kumasi. Seidu was also reportedly wanted in connection with an earlier robbery case still under investigation.
According to the police, the syndicate had returned to Techiman that night to carry out another robbery operation when officers intercepted them.
“Officers retrieved a motorbike and other tools believed to have been used in the attempted crime. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining suspects who fled the scene,” the statement added.
In response to the incident and the circulating misinformation, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special investigative team. This team comprises officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate. Their mandate is to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.
