The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 25-year-old man in possession of a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and military-style gear near the Asankare Police barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Yussif Mohammed, was apprehended on Wednesday, May 8, by the Konongo Divisional Police Command with assistance from members of the public.
The arrest followed an incident in which a backpack fell from an Accra-bound passenger bus travelling from Kumasi.
Yussif, a passenger on the bus, claimed ownership of the bag, prompting police to search its contents.

Inside the backpack, officers discovered:
-
207 rounds of assorted ammunition, including 97 rounds of G3, 42 rounds of AK-47, and 35 rounds of CZ ammunition
-
Two G3 magazines loaded with live rounds, along with empty CZ and G3 magazines
-
A bulletproof vest, military trousers and boots, and smocks embedded with talismans
-
Dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp
-
A crash helmet, black and green pullovers, and jackets
The police have launched an investigation and stated that the suspect will be processed for court in due course.

Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety.

“We have stepped up our operations to rid our communities of criminals and social misfits and to create a safe environment for law-abiding citizens to pursue their socio-economic activities without fear,” he said.
ACP Nyaaba also called for greater public cooperation, urging residents to support law enforcement by sharing timely information to help combat crime.
