“People are angry I keep winning” — LilWin says he’s done taking awards

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has hinted that he may no longer accept awards in the coming years after emerging as one of the biggest winners at the 15th edition of the Ghana Movie Awards held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City.

The celebrated actor, who won two awards on the night, opened up about the backlash and criticism he has faced over his continuous success in the movie industry, stating that some industry players appear unhappy with the recognition he keeps receiving.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, LilWin revealed that he may step aside to allow younger actors and upcoming talents to gain more visibility and encouragement through award recognition.

He said, “This is the last I’m taking. I don’t want more anymore. I will let them give the awards to the young artistes coming up to project them.”

According to the Wezzyempire boss, although he remains grateful for the honours he has received over the years, the criticism and attacks directed at him have become overwhelming.

“I have taken awards all over the world. The attacks coming on me are much… Some people are even angry that they have been in the movie industry for 15 years and so on but didn’t receive an award,” he stated.

Despite suggesting that he may stop accepting awards personally, LilWin made it clear that his productions would still compete strongly within the industry due to the level of work his team continues to put into filmmaking.

“But I will still take awards for my movies. So next year, if not that I don’t want to, I would have come for it. My upcoming movie ‘A Journey to Africa’ too is powerful,” he added.

LilWin’s comments come shortly after he won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Captain Ibrahim Traoré, further cementing his position as one of Ghana’s most successful actors and producers in recent years.

Over the years, the actor has built a strong reputation in Ghana’s film industry through his comic roles, local-language productions, and consistent movie releases under his Wezzyempire production brand, earning both admiration and criticism from different sections of the entertainment space.
