Eugene Boakye Antwi, an aspiring General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has rejected suggestions that the party could collapse amid reports of internal divisions and speculation about a possible breakaway.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the former Member of Parliament for Subin expressed confidence in the resilience and longevity of the party.
According to him, the NPP’s history demonstrates its ability to withstand internal challenges and political setbacks.
“There is no one who can form a party that will be like the NPP. The NPP, just like Asante Kotoko, will never collapse. No amount of breakaway can destroy the party. Nothing could break us, even when we were in opposition for 30 years. The NPP is not built around personalities,” he said.
Mr Boakye Antwi compared the party’s evolution to the succession of leaders in Asanteman, noting that leadership changes have never weakened the traditional authority structure.
“When I was born, Prempeh II was Asantehene. He was succeeded by Opoku Ware II, and now we have Osei Tutu II. It is the same with the NPP — we had Adu Boahen, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Akufo-Addo, and now Mahamudu Bawumia. They will come and go, but the NPP will remain,” he stated.
His remarks come at a time when discussions about internal cohesion within the party intensified prior to the internal elections.
However, Mr Boakye Antwi maintained that the NPP’s institutional foundations and broad support base make it too strong to disintegrate.
