The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Member of Parliament for Shama, Emilia Arthur, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring development reaches every part of the country, not just the cities.
Speaking at the first ordinary session of the Shama Municipal Assembly, she disclosed that the government has increased the District Assembly Common Fund and directed that it be sent directly to the assemblies.
According to her, this approach empowers local authorities who best understand the needs of rural communities to design and implement tailored development projects.
The minister further appealed to the public to support the government’s vision, stressing that development is a shared responsibility and that rural areas must not be left behind.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Shama, Ortis Dentu, highlighted the municipality’s ongoing initiatives, including improvements in education, healthcare, and roads.
He also revealed plans for the construction of a modern 24-hour economy market in Shama.
Dentu urged assembly members to collaborate fully to ensure the success of these projects.
On his part, the Presiding Member, Emmanuel Kojo Owuewie, emphasised the need to strengthen revenue generation.
He called for closer engagement with communities to boost local revenue mobilisation to sustain development efforts.
