“Parents’ scolding made some of us timid” – Perez Musik

Ghanaian gospel singer Perez Joel Okyere, popularly known as Perez Musik, has suggested that harsh childhood discipline may be one of the reasons some adults struggle with confidence and speaking openly.

The gospel musician, while reflecting on his upbringing and experiences as a leader, argued that children who were regularly reprimanded or punished in front of others could become hesitant about expressing themselves later in life.

“When we were growing up, our parents didn’t care where we were before they beat or scolded us. I also think that that’s what made some of us timid,” he explained.

Perez Musik said constant fear of being corrected could cause children to second-guess themselves whenever they have to speak, particularly in public.

“Because of the way your parents will shout at you when you are in public and you have to express yourself, you’re a bit laid back. You’re calculating if you should say something or not,” he stated.

He contrasted that experience with children raised in homes where their views are welcomed, saying such an environment can help them develop greater self-assurance.

“You will realise that kids that come from a home where they’re allowed to express themselves are more confident,” he shared.

The “Hallelujah” hitmaker also connected the issue to his own leadership style, admitting that he has previously been too forceful when trying to get people to meet his expectations.

“I’ve also been a type of leader where I’ve lashed out on people when I didn’t have to and I’ve discouraged them. Some people have left because maybe I spoke too harshly,” he admitted.

Perez Musik said he later recognised that what he considered motivation could sometimes be interpreted as discouragement, especially when communicated harshly.

His remarks highlight the lasting influence of childhood experiences and the importance of creating spaces where children and adults can communicate freely without being paralysed by fear of making mistakes.
