Gov’t to Roll Out Automated Traffic Enforcement, Nationwide Biometric ID System – Interior Minister
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced two major technology-driven interventions to improve road safety and criminal investigations in Ghana.
Speaking at the Police Regional Commanders’ Conference in Accra today, the minister said government is working with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to introduce an automated system to enforce road traffic laws and regulations by the end of this year.
“We are confident that this will contribute significantly to reducing the carnage on our roads,” Hon. Muntaka said.
The second intervention, which he described as “very dear to us,” is the National Criminal Automated Biometric Identification System.
According to the minister, government is working with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to deploy over 700 digital enrollment stations across the country by the end of 2026.
“We want to end the system where, if you have to do background checks, you have to come all the way to the Police Headquarters. You should be able to do these criminal checks at all 700 enrollment stations nationwide,” he explained.
The minister said the biometric system will enhance security through intelligence-led policing, improve data integrity and accuracy, and ensure secure infrastructure with national coverage.
Once completed, the system is expected to fast-track investigations, enable early detection of criminals, protect vulnerable groups, and improve justice delivery.
