NPP government did not cancel road tolls – Bantama MP
The Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Region has dismissed claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government cancelled road tolls across Ghana.
Asenson Boakye, who succeeded Amoako Attah as Minister for Roads and Highways, clarified in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time that the government has only suspended, not cancelled, the collection of road tolls.
The confusion arose after former Minister Amoako Attah, on November 18, 2021, directed a halt to the collection of road and bridge tolls nationwide, effective from 12 a.m. on a Thursday.
This followed announcements in the 2022 Budget, where the Finance Minister indicated the government’s intention to abolish road tolls once the budget was approved.
Asenso Boakye emphasised that the road toll law is still in effect.
“We did not cancel road tolls; we zero-rated them. This year and next year, we will not collect tolls. Cancelling them entirely would require changing the law. The suspension is to revise the collection process and digitalise it,” he explained.
