After Ghana’s 2012 general elections, the New Patriotic Party {NPP} led by Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia alleged that Mr Mahama and his NDC party won the  Presidential election fraudulently.

The NPP led by Bawumia and filed a petition at the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court, challenging the validity of the presidential election.

The NPP said there were irregularities in the polls that saw President John Mahama polling 5,574,761 (50.70%), while the party’s presidential candidate Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, had 5,248,898 of the valid votes cast, representing 47.74%.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, the party chairman were fronting the lawsuit.

However, Ghana’s Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the opposition and annulled President John Mahama’s narrow victory.

The NPP subsequently won the 2016 and 2020 elections led by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.

Going into the 2024 elections, there have been calls by some NPP top executives to allow Bawumia to lead the party to ‘break the eight. Because he has served the party very well and it is time (Aduru woso) to give him the mandate after Nana Addo’s tenure of office.

However, former Minister of Tourism, Catherine Ablema Afeku who is the Deputy Spokes Person for Alan Kyerematen has said, although Bawumia qualifies to lead the party, he is not the right candidate in line.

According to her, the fact that Bawumia represented the NPP in Supreme Court does not guarantee his lineage in the party.

“You (Bawumai) sitting in court to defend NPP doesn’t mean ‘Aduru Woso’.
I also sat in court with my pink sheets to defend NPP in my constituency. So the fact that Bawumia represented the party in Supreme Court doesn’t mean, aduru woso.” She emphatically stated on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Thursday.

She added that it’s only Mr Alan Kyerematen who is competent and next to lead the party to break the eight in 2024 polls.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set November 4, 2023, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The Vice President, Dr Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, Afriyie Akoto, and Kwabena Agyapong are all eyeing the flagbeareship position.
