The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to withdraw its earlier letters regarding post-retirement contracts for academic senior members in public universities.

The directive affects correspondence dated September 30 and October 1, 2025, which outlined guidance on post-retirement engagements within the tertiary education sector.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the decision follows a meeting between the Minister and leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana.

“The Honourable Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw its letters dated September 30 and October 1, 2025, concerning the post-retirement contracts of Academic Senior Members of public universities,” the statement said.

The Ministry explained that the move is intended to allow broader stakeholder consultations before a final policy direction is taken.

It added that the aim is to ensure any decision reflects consensus, supports institutional sustainability, and serves the interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement noted.

The Ministry further reiterated its commitment to a collaborative and transparent approach in addressing issues affecting higher education.

“The Ministry of Education remains committed to a transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach in addressing matters affecting the higher education landscape,” the statement, signed by Press Secretary Hashmin Mohammed, added.
