The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofuom Constituency, Joseph Azumah, has come to the defence of residents of Sikaman Brofoyedru following public criticism over their response to last week’s tragic military helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives.
The August 6, 2025, crash involved a Harbin Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining (galamsey) operation. All on board, including two cabinet ministers, top security officials, and Ghana Air Force crew members, perished.
In the wake of the tragedy, some social media users and commentators criticised the community’s actions at the crash site, stating that they had taken possession of some parts of the helicopter.
However, Azumah strongly condemned what he called “unnecessary public rebuke,” stressing that the residents deserved commendation, not ridicule.
“My people didn’t steal the helicopter parts. They only took it for safety purposes. They submitted all the parts after the Ashnati Regional Minister requested it.”
According to the MP, the people of Sikaman Brofoyedru played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of the crash, working tirelessly to recover and transport the remains of the victims from the wreckage.
“They showed unity, compassion, and respect for human life in a moment of national sorrow,” Azumah said, urging Ghanaians to recognise and appreciate the community’s sacrifices during such a difficult time.
He further noted that their swift and selfless actions contributed significantly to the dignified handling of the tragedy, even before the arrival of official rescue teams.
The MP called on the public to show empathy, respect, and gratitude towards the residents, emphasising that their efforts were a reflection of Ghana’s collective spirit in times of crisis.
