“Marriage is not on my list” — Bloody Civilian rejects pressure to settle down
Nigerian singer and songwriter Emoseh Khamofu, professionally known as Bloody Civilian, has opened up about the growing disconnect between her personal beliefs and the traditional expectations imposed on her by family and society.
The Taraba-born artiste made the revelation during a recent appearance on the Not Just On podcast, where she spoke candidly about how life in the entertainment industry has reshaped her perspective on relationships, womanhood and cultural obligations.
According to the 26-year-old singer, some of the values she was raised to embrace no longer appeal to her, especially the expectation that women should prioritise marriage at a certain stage in life.
“One thing my family still does not understand about being an artiste is the fact that certain conventional things they expect of a woman from the North are simply not things I am excited to do,” she said.
Speaking further, Bloody Civilian admitted that marriage is far from her priorities despite repeated pressure from relatives who continue to raise the topic.
“For instance, marriage is not something that I am thinking about at all. But that question keeps being brought up,” she stated.
Her comments have since stirred conversations online, particularly around the expectations placed on women from conservative Northern backgrounds and the growing number of female entertainers choosing independence over societal pressure.
Born Emoseh Khamofu, Bloody Civilian is a fast-rising Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer known for her bold sound, alternative style and socially conscious themes. She gained widespread attention with her breakout single ‘How To Kill A Man’ and later earned international recognition after contributing to the soundtrack of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. Celebrated for her fearless approach to music and storytelling, she has become one of the new-generation voices reshaping Nigeria’s alternative music scene.
