Mahama reaffirms commitment to Press Freedom, condemns assaults on Journalists

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting press freedom, making it clear that he will never tolerate attacks on journalists.

Speaking at his Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, the President condemned the increasing reports of harassment and assaults on media practitioners, particularly at public events where security personnel are involved.

“I have condemned assaults on journalists in any form. Journalists are simply doing their job — bringing information to the people, educating and entertaining them,” Mr. Mahama stated.

He expressed concern that some security officers had developed what he described as a “passion” for harassing journalists, stressing that such behaviour must stop. According to him, a mix of education, sanctions, and stronger cooperation between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and security agencies is needed to curb the trend.

“It’s about sanctioning those who assault journalists. I’ve been in discussions with the President of the GJA, and plans are underway to engage security agencies to raise awareness among their personnel. A journalist at an event is working, just as the security officer is. Neither has the right to assault the other,” he emphasised.

Mr. Mahama assured that his administration will continue to work closely with the GJA and other media stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for practitioners.

“As a lifetime member of the GJA, there is no way I will condone the assault of journalists in any form,” he reaffirmed.
