The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman, has announced the commencement of a sweeping decongestion operation across the city, beginning today, Monday, May 5, 2025.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA)-led initiative is focused on reclaiming public spaces through the demolition of unauthorized structures and the removal of goods displayed illegally on pavements.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Mayor Agyeman stated that the operation would target key areas notorious for congestion, including the Kejetia Roundabout—commonly known as the Otumfuo Roundabout—and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo.
“We will ensure that everyone occupying those spaces is removed. Any metallic object placed on the street will be cleared,” he said firmly.
The mayor emphasized that the Assembly had given ample warnings ahead of the exercise and would no longer tolerate illegal activities on public walkways.
“I will not make any more announcements. Everyone knows we will not entertain them there,” he declared.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the mayor to restore order in Kumasi’s central business district. Upon taking office, he had cautioned traders against operating on pavements, warning of consequences including corporal punishment for defiance.
Mayor Agyeman also acknowledged that previous enforcement methods—such as arrests and confiscation of goods—had failed to produce lasting change, as traders often returned to the same restricted areas.
“These acts of indiscipline are worsening congestion in the city and must be addressed decisively,” he concluded.
