K.T. Hammond’s past electoral wins in Adansi Asokwa were marred by violence – MP
The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Godwin Animli Dorghadzi-Dorani, has alleged that his predecessor, K.T. Hammond, secured his repeated electoral victories through violence and intimidation rather than genuine support from constituents.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Dorghadzi-Dorani claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under Mr. Hammond’s leadership in the constituency, employed aggressive tactics to dominate the electoral process over the years.
“During the previous elections, a lot of things happened. The NPP would take over the collation center, fire guns, and harass people. Sometimes the NDC didn’t even have representatives there because people were too afraid to go,” he recounted.
He further accused Mr. Hammond of disrespecting the people of Adansi Asokwa, saying the former MP failed to engage the community respectfully during his tenure.
K.T. Hammond, who represented Adansi Asokwa for six consecutive terms on the ticket of the NPP, lost his seat in the 2024 general elections to Mr. Dorghadzi-Dorani, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.
Official results showed Mr. Dorghadzi-Dorani polling 14,229 votes, while Mr. Hammond garnered 13,275 votes.
Following his defeat, Mr. Hammond filed an election petition at the Obuasi High Court in January 2025, challenging the outcome of the vote. However, the case was dismissed on August 19, 2025, after Mr. Hammond failed to appear for three consecutive court sittings. The court subsequently imposed a GH¢60,000 fine on him.
Mr. Dorghadzi-Dorani’s comments have reignited debate within Adansi Asokwa’s political circles about the conduct of past elections and the need for reforms to ensure greater transparency and fairness in the constituency’s electoral process.
