Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie sworn in as the new Chief Justice

The swearing-in ceremony, held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Jubilee House, was administered by President John Dramani Mahama. His appointment, confirmed by Parliament last week, fills the vacancy created after the dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Vice President, members of the Council of State, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, parliamentary leaders, all sitting Supreme Court Justices, and the new Chief Justice’s family.

President Mahama commended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s extensive judicial experience and unwavering commitment to the rule of law. He urged the new Chief Justice to safeguard judicial independence and focus on speeding up the adjudication of cases to restore public confidence in the justice system.

After taking the required oaths, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie outlined his vision for the Judiciary, pledging to pursue wide-ranging institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the third arm of government and improving access to justice.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s elevation to the highest judicial office crowns an accomplished legal career marked by scholarship, integrity and service.

  • Education: University of Ghana School of Law; Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Constitutional Theory from Oxford University.
  • Judicial Service: Appointed to the High Court in 1993, elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2005, and joined the Supreme Court in 2012.
  • Areas of Expertise: Constitutional law and human rights jurisprudence.
  • Judicial Record: Authored 87 majority opinions at the Supreme Court, with notable contributions in land dispute cases and electoral petition matters.

His appointment is widely expected to bring stability to the Judiciary, drawing on his decades of experience and deep legal knowledge.
