The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has traveled to Bawku in the Upper East Region with a high-powered team of operations, investigation, and intelligence officers to assess the ongoing security situation. This move follows violent clashes between local youth and law enforcement, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
The violence erupted after a confrontation between the youth and the police, during which Fuseini Iddrisu tragically lost his life. Five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving medical treatment.
On April 9, 2025, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces restored calm to the area. However, tensions reignited on Thursday, April 10, when a group of agitated youth allegedly set fire to the residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku, Mahama Ayariga.
According to reports, the MP’s house in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku, was initially attacked by youths throwing stones, damaging windows and other parts of the property. The situation escalated the following morning, culminating in an arson attack on the residence.
The violence appears to have been triggered by widespread outrage over the alleged police killing of a young man. In a statement on April 10, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the IGP and his team will visit the family of the deceased, the injured individuals, and officers who lost property during the unrest.
The Police Service also reassured the public that they will continue to work closely with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, and local leaders to maintain peace and restore order in Bawku.
