Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has publicly criticised President John Dramani Mahama for his handling of the controversy surrounding Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board.
Speaking at the Entrepreneurship and National Leadership event at Central University on Thursday, May 15, Mr. Agyapong expressed disappointment at what he described as the President’s failure to act decisively in the wake of a viral video showing Gyamfi handing over an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to controversial evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.
“If I were the President, I would have sacked Sammy Gyamfi immediately. The evidence was clear — there was no need for any investigation,” Agyapong said. “Nepotism and favoritism are what are killing this country.”
Agyapong’s comments reflect growing public concern over the conduct of senior public officials and the apparent lack of accountability in high-profile cases.
The video involving Gyamfi has triggered widespread backlash, with many questioning potential breaches of the Foreign Exchange Act and ethical misconduct.
The outspoken former lawmaker also used the platform to call out what he sees as entrenched nepotism in the public sector, warning that it continues to undermine national development.
“Young men and women complete their university education, and even to do national service at a reputable company, you must know someone or pay your way in,” he lamented. “Nepotism results in square pegs in round holes — unqualified people in critical positions.”
Agyapong emphasized the urgency of addressing these systemic issues, warning that without reform, Ghana’s progress will remain hindered by corruption and favoritism.
