The Kumasi High Court has handed down a life sentence and an additional 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour to 36-year-old Dominic Afriyie, also known as “GH,” for his role in a violent robbery and the murder of a pharmacist in Atasemanso in 2021.
The sentence was delivered on Thursday, May 15, by His Lordship Mr. Abdul Razak, ESQ, following a full trial. A seven-member jury unanimously found Afriyie guilty on two counts of robbery and one count of murder.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on November 20, 2021, when Afriyie broke into the home of 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu. Armed with a gun, Afriyie robbed Mr. Klu of two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH₵1,500 in cash. He then fatally shot the victim before fleeing the scene.
Acting on intelligence about a planned robbery in the area, police arrested Afriyie and three accomplices on December 31, 2021, at around 2:20 a.m. The suspects were apprehended in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20.
A search of the vehicle revealed two pistols and two single-barrel shotguns.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that Afriyie had acted alone in the Atasemanso robbery and murder. Despite his plea of not guilty, the overwhelming evidence presented in court led to his conviction.
Speaking on the verdict, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Region, praised the court’s decision and reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
“This conviction underscores our commitment to bringing violent criminals to justice and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” DSP Ahianyo stated.
The ruling has been welcomed by many as a significant step in deterring violent crime and reinforcing the rule of law in the Ashanti Region.
