The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako widely known as Chairman Wontumi has once again emphasized his role as a key financial force within the party.
However, his recent revelations are prompting renewed scrutiny over the deepening role of money in internal party affairs.
Speaking in a recent interview on his own network, the outspoken regional leader made a striking claim: ““I paid for all polling station, constituency, and regional forms in 2014 and 2018, and in 2022, I did the same in Ashanti, even for my opponent.”
While Wontumi framed these actions as acts of generosity, they also underscore a growing concentration of power rooted in financial dominance—one that may tilt the internal democratic balance of the party.
He went further, recounting his significant financial support for the NPP’s 2015 National Delegates Conference in Tamale, where he claimed to have contributed one billion old Ghana cedis.
He also cited efforts such as distributing school supplies nationwide during the party’s time in opposition as part of his broader support for the NPP.
These declarations reinforce Chairman Wontumi’s image as a powerful figure within the party but also stir debate about the extent to which money shapes political influence and decision-making within the NPP.
These acts, he insists, were done without expectations of a government appointment — a claim he emphasized proudly: “I’ve never held any government position. I’ve done it all from my own resources.”
The sheer scale of his investments has sparked admiration from his supporters, who see him as a tireless party loyalist.
