I have not seen anything that shows the NPP wants to win power – Prof. Charles Marfo

The Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Charles Marfo, has expressed doubts about the readiness of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to return to power.

His comments come after the NPP Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, signalled a shift in the party’s focus, urging the Minority Caucus in Parliament to move beyond internal reflection following the 2024 election defeat and begin positioning the party as a credible government-in-waiting.

“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029,” Dr Bawumia said.

Reacting during a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, hosted by Akua Asiedua, Prof. Marfo said he was unconvinced that the NPP was adequately preparing to win back political power.

He argued that recent actions and internal developments within the party do not reflect a clear or coordinated strategy aimed at regaining public confidence.

“I don’t think the NPP is grieving. If they were, people like Wontumi would not be attempting to become national chairman,” he said.

Prof. Marfo further cautioned political actors against underestimating voters, stressing that parties must demonstrate seriousness and readiness if they intend to regain power.

“It is important that people do not take the electorate for granted. The NPP is aware that they do not have what it takes to win power. It is important they focus on the downfall of the NDC to win power, and that is exactly what they are doing, but I think the way they are doing it is questionable,” he stated.

“For me, I don’t see anything that shows the NPP is ready for power,” he added.
