Health Minister, pledges more specialist Doctors, Commissions new MDC Training Centre in Pantang

The Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Ghanaians that government remains committed to training more specialist doctors to address pressing challenges in the healthcare ecosystem.

He gave the assurance while commissioning a Specialist Training Centre and Head Office Complex for the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana at Pantang in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Minister, his outfit understands the critical role specialist doctors play in the healthcare system. He said he will continue to advocate for the progressive development of health practitioners to improve service delivery nationwide.

Hon. Akandoh explained that the new Training Centre will provide an institutional platform for advancing specialist training, professional examinations, research, conferencing, and continuous professional development.

He, however, stressed that the future success of the Centre cannot rest solely on government. He therefore encouraged the Board, management, and leadership of the Centre to think innovatively about long-term sustainability.

“Strategic partnerships, international collaborations, research grants, professional development programs, conference hosting, endowment funds, and other sustainable financial models should be actively explored to supplement government support,” he said.

The Juaboso legislator added that the Centre reflects government’s belief in quality healthcare as the foundation of primary healthcare delivery for all Ghanaians.

The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council, Dr. Divine N. Banyubala, has said the new facility will significantly improve the Council’s operational efficiency and service delivery.

He noted that the true measure of the facility’s success will not be determined by its architecture or physical infrastructure. Rather, he said, it will be judged by the quality of regulation it supports, the standards it upholds, the professionals it guides, the patients it protects, and the confidence it inspires among the Ghanaian public.

“May this facility serve as a center of excellence, innovation, integrity, and professionalism. May it strengthen the Council’s ability to guide the medical and dental professions and protect the public. And may it stand as a lasting symbol of our unwavering commitment to safe, ethical, and high-quality healthcare for all Ghanaians,” he stated.

Dr. Banyubala also expressed his profound appreciation to the Minister of Health, development partners, especially the World Bank, and all stakeholders whose contributions made the project a reality.

The Board Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council, Professor Agyemang Bedu Akosa, has called on the Minister to exempt the Medical and Dental Council from taxes on its Internally Generated Funds so it can achieve more than it is currently doing.

According to him, the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana is at the summit of medical regulation in the whole of Africa.
