The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have strongly denied reports suggesting that the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, was attacked during a recent visit to Bawku.
In a statement issued on April 25, 2025, and signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, GAF clarified that two videos circulating on social media purporting to show such an incident are entirely false.
“The contents of the said videos are false and should be treated with the contempt they deserve,” the statement emphasized.
GAF confirmed that Major General Gbetanu’s operational visit to Bawku on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, was conducted successfully and without incident.
The statement also disclosed that investigations are underway to trace the source of the misleading videos, with the aim of holding those responsible accountable. GAF further cautioned media practitioners and content creators to exercise responsibility in their reporting, especially concerning military operations in sensitive areas like Bawku.
“GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators, and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations, especially in Bawku, since any deliberate misinformation and disinformation of the populace has the potential to worsen the security situation in the area,” the statement warned.
GAF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security, and called on the public to disregard unfounded reports that could inflame tensions.
