The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Friday, April 25, officially inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the University of Ghana at a ceremony held in Accra.
The 18-member council, chaired by Henrietta Agyeiwaa Brew, has been entrusted with the responsibility of driving the university’s educational and infrastructure development agenda.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Minister Iddrisu revealed the government’s renewed commitment to supporting academic research and higher education.
He announced that the National Research Fund will soon be operational, with a seed allocation of GHC50 million to facilitate its launch.
“The president has asked me to assure you that this year, he is determined to operationalise the National Research Fund.”
The minister said. “An amount of GHC50 million has already been allocated to kickstart this initiative.”
He further urged the university to explore legitimate public-private partnerships to expand both academic and residential infrastructure in order to accommodate growing student numbers.
The minister also emphasized the importance of collaboration with affiliate institutions to enhance the overall quality and reach of tertiary education in the country.
