EPA cracks down on illegal mining, impounds equipment in Eastern Region

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in the Eastern Region has carried out a major enforcement operation in Osino, Fanteakwa South District, targeting illegal mining activities and unlicensed businesses.

During the exercise, the EPA seized several excavators and wheel loaders suspected to be used in unlawful operations. Shops dealing in mining equipment and Changfan machine parts without valid permits—including both Chinese-owned and local businesses—were shut down, while welding and fabrication centres producing Changfan components were also closed.

Heavy-duty machines found at illegal mining sites were impounded and transported to the EPA regional office for documentation.

Regional EPA Director, Sydney Kweku Danso, who led the operation, stressed that the crackdown aligns with the nationwide ban on the use of Changfan machines. “No political influence or appeals will shield offenders. This exercise will be firm and uncompromising,” he said.

Danso urged individuals and businesses to adhere to EPA regulations to protect their operations and safeguard the environment. He added that more communities in the Eastern Region will be targeted in the coming days as the enforcement drive continues.
