CID refers Afenyo-Markin assault case to Attorney-General for advice
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has forwarded a case involving the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the Attorney-General’s Department for review and legal advice.
The referral, contained in a letter dated June 27, 2025, and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Justice Oppong on behalf of the Director-General of the CID, follows an investigation by the Department’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) into an alleged altercation between the lawmaker and a police officer during a public demonstration.
According to a CID report sighted by Adomonline.com, the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, during the “Save the Judiciary” protest, when a one-minute, 13-second video — bearing the official watermark of the Ghana Police Service — surfaced online.
The footage reportedly showed Hon. Afenyo-Markin in a scuffle with police officers enforcing a restricted boundary marked by metal barricades. Preliminary video analysis indicated that the MP was seen striking G/Cpl. Forson Abel, a police officer attached to the Tesano District Police Command. The case was subsequently assigned to the SIU for detailed investigation.
G/Cpl. Forson Abel later filed a formal complaint at the Tesano Police Station on May 6, 2025, alleging assault by the MP. He supported his claim with a medical report and witness statements from senior officers — including Superintendent Isane Ocansey and ASPs Sulemana-Jallo Abdulalai and Nicholas Mensah — all of whom confirmed his account of being struck without provocation.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin, however, lodged a counter-complaint on the same day, insisting that he was the one assaulted by the officer during the confrontation.
Investigators from the SIU, Crime Scene Management, and Cybercrime Units later visited the location to reconstruct the incident. Two CCTV cameras installed at the Accra International Conference Centre were identified as potential evidence sources, prompting a request to the National Security Secretariat for the footage.
While the video obtained from the National Security Bureau did not capture the moment of the alleged assault, the initial footage from the Police Public Affairs Department was used to caution Hon. Afenyo-Markin, who was subsequently released on self-recognizance bail in the presence of an independent witness. He was also issued a police medical form for examination.
Statements were additionally taken from Hon. Sammy Awuku and Richard Ahiagbah, both of whom were said to be present at the time of the altercation.
The report noted that the MP failed to return the completed medical form despite multiple reminders from investigators.
The CID has since submitted the docket to the Attorney-General’s Department for review and a determination on possible legal action.
