In a stunning revelation, former Sports Minister, Elvis Afiriyie Ankrah has lifted the lid on the 2014 Black Stars team, describing them as politicians who prioritized financial gain over national pride.
According to Afiriyie Ankrah, the players’ focus was squarely on money, rather than the game itself.
He alleged that their desire for personal enrichment compromised their performance and ultimately led to the team’s disappointing showing at the 2014 World Cup.
“Their focus was all about the money; they didn’t have the country’s best interests at heart. They were more concerned with their bonuses and appearance fees than with winning games and making Ghana proud.”
“At a point, I thought they were players negotiating in the interest of other players, but I realized some of them were politicians,” the former sports minister said in an interview with Sometymer on Oyerepa FM’s Today’s Sports, Tuesday.
Unexpectedly, Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars team, has been selected as a member of the manifesto committee in the sports sector of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as they strive to maintain their hold on power.
