Deputy Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has cast doubt on the future of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s political career, stating emphatically that the Vice President cannot be rebranded to win the support of ordinary Ghanaians in the 2028 elections.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Owusu-Bempah dismissed suggestions that the party could reshape Bawumia’s image in preparation for the 2028 general elections, comparing his situation to that of former President John Mahama, who was able to recover from political setbacks.
“NDC was able to rebrand Mahama and was able to win an election, but Bawumia can’t be rebranded because the grassroots don’t like him,” he said bluntly.
When pressed further on the possibility of repositioning Bawumia for another shot at the presidency, Owusu-Bempah responded with a cryptic remark:
“There are certain things you cannot tie together. Sometimes what is good for a particular house would be bad for another house. I’m speaking in parables and only the wise will understand me.”
His comments come amid internal party reflections following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, where Bawumia served as the party’s flagbearer.
The loss has prompted growing calls from party activists and commentators for leadership changes and a new strategy heading into 2028.
