President John Mahama has, with immediate effect, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case concerning three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The decision, taken in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, comes after consultations with the Council of State, which confirmed that there was sufficient basis to proceed with an investigation into the allegations raised in the petitions.
In accordance with constitutional procedures, President Mahama has constituted a five-member committee to probe the matter. The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang.
Other members of the committee include Supreme Court Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana.
The committee is expected to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit its findings for further action.
