Appietus: “My Wife’s Divorce Threat Pushed Me to Create ‘Appietus in the Mix’”

Renowned music producer and sound engineer Appiah Dankwah, popularly known as Appietus, has revealed that his famous signature jingle, “Appietus in the mix”, was born out of a surprising source—his wife’s ultimatum.

In a video shared on social media, the award-winning producer disclosed that he initially had no intention of adding a producer tag or signature to his music, even though it had become a growing trend in the industry at the time.

“I just wanted to focus on my work without following the crowd,” he explained. “But my wife kept insisting I add a signature like the others.”

Appietus noted that his wife’s persistence reached a boiling point when she threatened to divorce him over his refusal to follow her advice. “One day, she even packed her things to leave,” he recounted.

Motivated by the ultimatum, Appietus eventually gave in and added the now-iconic “Appietus in the mix” and “Appiah and his tools” phrases to his productions—a move that helped cement his name in Ghana’s music history.

He explained that at the time, top producers like Jeff Quaye (JQ) and Hammer (The Last Two) were known for their unique audio tags, which helped brand their work. Appietus had none.

Interestingly, the origin of the voice behind the “Appietus in the mix” jingle was unplanned. He revealed that it was actually Shatta Wale’s voice—but the dancehall star had no idea.

“I was recording Shatta in the studio when I had to step out to take a phone call. While I was away, he started calling out for me—‘Appietus! Appietus!’ I later used that raw vocal to create the jingle,” he said.

What started as a simple shout in the studio turned into one of the most recognisable producer tags in Ghanaian music—thanks, in part, to a determined wife who knew the power of branding.
