Afenyo-Markin Warns GoldBod Officials of ‘Day of Reckoning’ Over Reported Losses
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned officials responsible for the management of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) that they will eventually be held accountable over reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
He said the Minority would continue to demand answers from the government and GoldBod over what it considers significant financial losses incurred by the state.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin said those responsible for the programme would not be able to avoid scrutiny indefinitely.
“The Minority will say this firmly and boldly. It doesn’t matter the adjectives you will use to attack our personality. We know that a day of reckoning will come. They should remember that post-regime accountability awaits them,” he said.
IMF Report Raises Questions
The Minority Leader’s comments follow an August report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which indicated that the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, implemented through GoldBod, recorded losses exceeding US$1.7 billion in 2025.
The IMF said the losses represented approximately 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Mr Afenyo-Markin insisted that the figures warranted closer scrutiny and maintained that the Minority would not abandon its demand for an explanation of how the losses occurred.
He said criticism directed at the opposition would not stop the Minority from questioning the government’s handling of the programme and Ghana’s gold resources.
According to him, officials currently overseeing the programme should not assume that they will escape accountability once they leave office.
He reiterated that the Minority would continue to pursue the matter and demand transparency over the financial performance of GoldBod and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
