NPP Will Reinstate Torkornoo as Chief Justice If We Win – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will seek to reinstate former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo if the party returns to power after the next general election.

According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the NPP believes Justice Torkornoo’s removal from office was unjust and that the circumstances surrounding her exit from the Judiciary require a reversal.

Speaking on Atinka TV, the Effutu MP criticised the process that led to the former Chief Justice’s removal and alleged that some members of the Supreme Court played a role in what he described as a coordinated effort against her.

He specifically accused the current Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, of being involved in the alleged plot against his predecessor.

“My Lord Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor Gertrude Torkornoo. Her removal was a grand conspiracy and he knows it and we know it, but one day, one day, the true story will be told,” he alleged.

Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that Justice Torkornoo deserves to be restored to her former position should the NPP regain power.

“I don’t see why that woman will not be reinstated when the NPP wins power. Her removal is an act of injustice,” he stated.

Justice Torkornoo was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023 and became the first Chief Justice of Ghana’s Fourth Republic to be removed from office.

Her removal followed proceedings under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution and triggered intense political and legal debate, with the NPP repeatedly questioning the process and the basis for the decision.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has consistently criticised the circumstances surrounding her removal and has called for her reinstatement.

The latest comments further signal the NPP’s intention to revisit the matter should it return to government, with the Minority Leader maintaining that Justice Torkornoo’s removal was unjustified.
