The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called on the government to strengthen support for local pharmaceutical companies in Ghana.
His appeal follows the recent announcement by the United States that it will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a move Dr. Agyemang says could have far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking to Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the MP warned that the US decision threatens global health security, particularly for lower- and middle-income countries like Ghana.
“It is an unfortunate development. The WHO’s convening authority is pivotal in coordinating donor activities, establishing evidence-based standards, and ensuring equitable access to global public goods, including vaccines and essential medicines. Over the years, the US alone has contributed 15 percent of WHO’s funding. Its withdrawal poses a significant risk to health security in countries such as ours,” he said.
Dr. Agyemang emphasized the importance of supporting local pharmaceutical companies, noting that high taxes on locally produced medicines are limiting production.
“Imported drugs often retail at prices lower than the factory price of locally produced medicines. We must support local production. The government should make a concerted effort to promote and prioritize locally made pharmaceutical products and services,” he added.
