Abronye on hunger strike in Police custody – Lawyer

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has embarked on a hunger strike while in police custody, according to his lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa.

Mr. Afoakwa explained that his client’s decision is a form of protest against what he describes as political persecution following Abronye’s arrest and remand.

“Abronye is a man full of life. He knows this is mere political persecution, and he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” Afoakwa told reporters.

The lawyer confirmed that Abronye has refused both food and water since his detention, insisting it is a deliberate choice to draw attention to his treatment.

“Yes, he is pursuing what he is pursuing in furtherance of democracy. Certainly, he is on a hunger strike,” he said.

According to Afoakwa, his client fears for his safety in custody and believes abstaining from food and water is a form of self-protection.

“Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people, treating you as if you have committed a treasonable offence, will give you safe food and water? He is simply trying to protect his life,” he explained.

Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025, and subsequently remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court the next day.

The police cited “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace” as the reason for his arrest but have not disclosed full details of the case. The court explained that the two-week remand is to allow the prosecution to complete its investigations.

Abronye is expected to reappear before the court on September 26, 2025.

The arrest and hunger strike have drawn widespread public interest due to Abronye’s high-profile political role and his history of outspoken political commentary.
