John Dumelo debunks claims that MPs make money from parliament

Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Setor Dumelo, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has challenged the perception that serving as a parliamentarian is a financially rewarding venture.

Dumelo made the comments while responding to a question from a social media user on X about the benefits attached to holding a seat in Ghana’s Parliament.

According to the former actor, financial rewards are not the main attraction for everyone who seeks a parliamentary position, stressing that people enter politics for different reasons.

“People have different reasons for wanting to go to Parliament… but money no dey inside like that. You can, however, use your position as an MP as leverage for certain things,” he said.

The MP acknowledged that holding political office may create access and influence that can be useful in other areas, but maintained that claims of MPs directly making substantial money from their positions should not be taken as fact.

His remarks are likely to fuel the long-running public debate over the financial privileges, allowances and other benefits associated with Ghanaian parliamentarians, particularly amid recurring concerns about the cost of political office.
