Allocate part of flood erlief fund to affected drivers – C-DAG appeals to Government

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana is calling on the government to use part of the GH¢300 million flood relief fund to support commercial drivers whose vehicles were damaged during the floods that hit Accra on Monday, June 29.

Speaking to the media, the President of the Association, Paa Willie, said many drivers operating from major transport terminals, including Circle, 37, Kaneshie, VIP, Neoplan, and Accra Station, had their engines and electrical systems damaged after driving through floodwaters.

“As a matter of urgency, we are calling on the government to support drivers whose vehicles have become faulty because of the flooding,” Mr. Willie said.

“In this era of modern vehicles, especially those with sophisticated electronic systems, once water enters the engine, the vehicle can be severely damaged. Government should consider using part of the GH¢300 million released for flood victims to also support affected drivers.”

He appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to meet with transport unions across the country and provide the necessary assistance to help affected drivers repair their vehicles and return to work.

Mr. Willie also addressed public criticism suggesting that the President should have used a vehicle instead of a helicopter during his inspection of flood-hit areas on Monday.

According to him, the President made the right decision.

“The helicopter enabled him to identify all the flooded areas across Accra. It was the right decision,” he stated.

He commended President Mahama for his swift response to the disaster and for personally assessing the extent of the destruction across the capital.

The Association warned that without urgent government support, many affected drivers may be unable to resume operations, a situation that could disrupt transportation services and potentially affect transport fares in Accra in the coming weeks.
